Many freedmen, including Menéndez, fearing being enslaved once more, fled to Cuba. After the Seven Years War, Spanish-occupied Florida was ceded to the British. He defended Fort Mose during multiple attacks - including an attempted attack by the then Governor of Georgia. Here, he was quickly named a leader in the Black militia. He eventually settled in the town Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, formed in 1737 and colloquially known as Fort Mose. Males searching for freedom in Spanish-occupied Florida also needed to complete a term of military service.įrancisco Menéndez successfully escaped from his enslavers in South Carolina in 1724 and made his way to Saint Augustine. In 1737, Spanish officials began enforcing royal edicts from 16 granting freedom to those who fled British colonies and who were willing to convert to Catholicism. In the 17th and 18th centuries, when European nations were colonizing North America, Spanish controlled Florida became a place of freedom. Today marks the first day of #HispanicHeritageMonth. America was now officially involved in World War II. The next day, America declares war to Japan and later to Germany and Italy. The Japanese only lost 29 aircraft and 64 men. In just two hours, the Japanese had destroyed 328 American aircraft, nineteen navy ships and killed around 2,400 Americans.

To make matters worse, at around 9 AM the second attack wave of 171 planes arrived to strike the final blow. Within minutes, the Japanese had set Peal Harbor on fire. The Japanese used a new type of torpedo which can be dropped in shallow water, copied from the royal navy during the battle of Taranto. In panic they tried to make their ships operational to fight back, but for most of the ships it was already too late. The Americans could hardly do anything but watch how everything around them turns into flames. The Japanese then focus on the battleships, helplessly at anker at the harbor. This made them an extraordinary easy target for the Japanese, who destroyed hundreds of planes within minutes. The Americans had purposely settled all their planes on the runways, so local inhabitants couldn’t sabotage the planes. As part of their strategy, the Japanese first targeted the airfields, taking out any defense planes before they can fight back. The first attack wave (as well as the second) included three groups of planes with different targets. The Americans were completely taken by surprise. The sky was clear and there was not a single US fighter plane in the sky waiting for them. The Japanese pilots couldn’t believe their eye. Half an hour later, 183 Japanese aircraft filled the skies above Pearl Harbor. Remarkably enough, the officer on duty did not issue a warning about it.

The Americans were enjoying their free Sunday morning, when a radar spotted a large swarm of aircraft in the skies heading towards Pearl Harbor at 7.25 AM. The attack, planned carefully by Admiral Yamamoto, came as a complete surprise for the US Pacific Fleet, which was at anker at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

On the morning of 7 December 1941, the Japanese imperial Navy made a move that would change history forever: The attack on Pearl Harbor.
